New Brighton Primary School
Flag Ceremony
Vale Park Bandstand – 15th April 2011
As a culmination to the events of our community cohesion week, New Brighton Primary school held a flag ceremony at Vale Park bandstand to send a message of world peace to all the nations and peoples of Earth. The event was attended by all staff and pupils of the school and supported by hundreds of our parents who attended on a rather dull April afternoon. Thanks must go to the World Peace Prayer Societies Glenda Thornton who helped the school organise the event.
Each year group had spent the week focussing on the lives of children in their chosen continent and learning about the similarities and differences as well as the challenges these children can face in receiving an education.
Each year group paraded their continents flags and undertook a performance to celebrate all they had learned over the week.
Nursery, Reception and Class 9, representing Europe, sang ‘Frere Jacque’ in French and English
Year 1, representing Oceania, presented the audience with a lovely rendition of ‘Kookaburra’
Year 2, representing Asia and the Middle East, sang a lovely song about Chinese New Year and treated the audience to a very colourful Dragon dance.
Year 3, representing North and Central America, serenaded the gathered pupils and parents with a calypso melody, ‘Under the sea’.
Year 5, representing South America, presented a beautiful, colourful collection of South American art.
Year 4, representing the continent of Africa, performed
‘Nkosi Sikelel‘ iAfrika’ – God bless Africa, sung in Xhosa, one of the many languages of South Africa.
The event finished with year 6 parading the Earth flag and reading a message of peace to all the peoples of all nations on Earth.
